Banana Almond Smoothie
Adapted from Bon Appetit: http://www.bonappetit.com/recipe/banana-almond-smoothie
When I was a little girl my three favorite sandwiches were Oscar Meyer Bologna and mayo on Wonder Bread, Spam and mayo on Wonder Bread, and peanut butter on Wonder Bread. I think I single-handedly kept Wonder Bread in business since it was my bread of choice.
Fast forward to now and I can’t even remember the last time I had any of those mouth-watering sandwiches. I’m not being sarcastic. I would eat any of those sandwiches in a heartbeat, but I won’t because 1) my 2-pack is getting lonely and waiting for the 4-pack to join it, 2) it would probably kill the WOD (workout of the day) of running with deadlifting, hang power cleans, front squats, and shoulder to overheads that I’m going to do in a couple of hours, and 3) I know I will cut my hand trying to open a pack of Oscar Meyer Bologna.
So how do I satisfy one of my sandwich cravings without feeling and looking crappy after I’m done and potentially having a hand injury?
A Bologna or Spam smoothie is just simply gross so I can scratch those off the sandwich-to-smoothie list.
That leaves peanut butter, which is more appetizing. And even more appetizing is almond butter, which is in this smoothie.
I came across this recipe on Bon Appetit and it satisfied my peanut butter sandwich craving. Don’t get me wrong nothing replaces the deliciousness of a real sandwich and bread (oh, bread! I love you!), but for reasons 1-3 that I listed above, this is a great substitute. And if I have this often enough I won’t feel bad when I’m eating an actual sandwich – like my current favorite: a fully-loaded Italian sub. Hots and all. Well, minus the onions.
The first time I made this I thought it was just meh. But that was because my banana wasn’t frozen and I added a few ice cubes to make up for the room temperature banana. It ended up watering everything down and taking away the flavor. The original recipe also calls for 1 tablespoon of almond butter, but I add an extra ½ tablespoon for a little more flavor.
Aside from tasting good and making you feel good, this smoothie tastes like a sweet treat. If wanted to you could also add some protein powder to it. I would add a coffee-flavored protein powder, especially when I want to have a Coffee Coolatta.
